Hospice Toronto is seeking In-home Hospice Volunteers!

Adding Life to Days...

Started 25 years ago, Hospice Toronto is Toronto’s first volunteer and community-based, not for profit, in-home hospice palliative care program.

In-home Hospice volunteers provide companionship, emotional and spiritual support, practical assistance and caregiver relief to individuals who are living with a life threatening illness and to their families. Visits take place in the client's home for approximately 4 hours per week and the visit schedule is based on the client's needs and the volunteer's availability. **The majority of client requests are for visits during the daytime on weekdays, so we are always seeking volunteers with week-day daytime availability.**

Additional Information

Volunteering at Hospice Toronto can be a demanding and challenging opportunity, yet a very rewarding and fulfilling one that allows our clients to die at home with dignity and support. We look forward to hearing from you.

Minimum hours per week

4 hours per week for a minimum of one year.

Task requirements

We are looking for people with compassion and sensitivity. It is not necessary to have any prior experience with dying and death or any medical background. You need a warm heart, an ability to remain clear about your role, and calm and centered in sometimes difficult situations. A sense of humor and common sense are essential! **People who are available during the day on weekdays are particularly needed.**

Office Building is accessible for meetings/trainings.

Completion of the comprehensive 35+ hour palliative care training program is mandatory before beginning to work with hospice clients. The training program includes topics such as Communication Skills, Family Dynamics, Cultural Competency, Understanding Boundaries and the Role of the Volunteer, Hands-on Care Skills, Grief and Bereavement etc. Volunteers must complete 100% of the training program before being matched with a client.
