Organization: VHA Home HealthCare: Community Support Department 

Position: ESL In- Home Tutor Opportunity

Help parents build their English language skills and become more familiar with their community as an ESL tutor! Volunteers assist parents to read, write and practice conversational English they need to access resources, educational programs and employment opportunities. You will visit the parents in their home while their children are present.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Mentor parent to improve their knowledge of English conversational skills
  • Identify learning needs and provide support
  • Help client develop confidence speaking and listening to English
  • Research relevant topics of interest to promote learning Prepare topics to widen client’s knowledge of community resources and opportunities
  • Provide feedback and guidance on language development
  • Attend monthly volunteer education/training Submit weekly log

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (9am-5pm)
  • Minimum 2 hours a week or more if available
  • 6 month commitment or 24 tutoring sessions
  • Mandatory monthly training session totaling 6 hours

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience teaching ESL to newcomers an asset or willingness to be trained
  • Dependable and self motivated, with the ability to facilitate tutoring sessions with minimal supervision
  • Empathetic and compassionate about the challenges faced by newcomers
  • Ability to recognize and respect cultural differences and apply this knowledge in cross-cultural
  • Good command of the English language
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
